Associate of Science in Nursing - Frequently Asked Questions
1. HOW OFTEN ARE STUDENTS ADMITTED INTO THE ASN PROGRAM?
Students are admitted every fall and spring term.
2. WHAT ARE THE ADMISSIONS REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO THE PROGRAM?
A student must be a graduate of an accredited High School. or a certified state home school program or recipient of a GED. A student must have a graduated with a minimum GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and have taken the ACT (20) or SAT (900 - old SAT or 1500 - new SAT). For students who have not taken these exams, scores can be waived provided there have been adequate courses taken at the college level in the physical and social sciences. A minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale will be required from all college level courses.
3. IS FULL TIME ENROLLMENT REQUIRED?
The curriculum is designed for a student to be full-time. Students who have completed some of the general education requirements do not have to be fulltime. Having general education course complete does not shorten the nursing curriculum. The nursing curriculum is planned on a cohort schedule and cannot be taken out of sequence.
4. DO YOU OFFER A LPN PROGRAM?
Queens does not offer a LPN program but does have a two year option- ASN. Students who have completed an LPN program are not required to be listed on the North Carolina registry for Nurse Aides.
5. ARE PROSPECTIVE STUDENTS REQUIRED TO BECOME A CERTIFIED NURSING ASSISTANT (CNA) BEFORE APPLYING TO THE PROGRAM?
All students are required to be listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aid I Registry before applying to the program.
6. WHAT IS THE DEADLINE FOR APPLYING TO THE ASN PROGRAM?
June 15th for the Spring term and February 15th for the Fall term
7. WHAT CONSTITUTES A COMPLETED APPLICATION?
All completed applications will include:
• ASN application
• $40 application fee (money order or personal check)
• One official high school transcript
• One official college transcript (from all universities and colleges attended)
• Written statement and resume
8. ARE LETTERS OF RECOMMENDATION REQUIRED FOR THE ADMISSIONS PROCESS?
Students are not required to submit letters of recommendation however they will be reviewed as part of the admissions file if submitted. Letters of recommendation only strengthen file when they show support of work experience or academic performance.
9. HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR THE ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE TO MEET (OR MAKE DECISIONS)?
Applicants will be notified of an admissions decision within 4-6 weeks after the deadline.
10. WHAT ARE THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH ENROLLMENT IN THE ASN PROGRAM?

11. IF I AM ACCEPTED INTO THE PROGRAM, WHAT WILL MY SCHEDULE LOOK LIKE?
The ASN program is designed to have a full-time schedule. However, it is possible to transfer the general education courses into the program. If the transfer credits are accepted into the program, the program will still take two years to complete. A sample (full-time) schedule for the first year can be viewed here.
12. CAN I TAKE THE NURSING COURSES DURING THE EVENING?
Typically, nursing courses are scheduled during the day. Clinicals may be scheduled during the day or evening. General education courses can also be taken during the day or evening.
13. HOW CAN I CALCULATE MY CUMULATIVE GRADE POINT AVERAGE (GPA)?
The GPA is calculated by dividing the total number of grade points earned by the total amount of credit hours attempted. Back to College offers an online calculator to help students figure out how to calcuate the GPA.
14. DOES PRESBYTERIAN HOSPITAL OFFER A TUITION REIMBURSEMENT PROGRAM FOR QUEENS GRADUATES THAT WORK FOR THE HOSPITAL AFTER GRADUATION?

15. ARE APPLICANTS REQUIRED TO TAKE A NURSING ENTRANCE EXAM?
Yes, all applicants are required to take the Kaplan Nursing Entrance Exam for consideration into the ASN program.
