Summer 2009 Queens Magazine
Dear Alumni and Friends,
As we all look forward to an exciting New Year, I hope you’ll enjoy the new look of the Queens Magazine and its fresh focus on the compelling stories that we love to hear about our alumni, faculty, students, and friends of the university.
Most magazines undergo a redesign every three to five years to keep them fresh and appealing to their readers. Since it had been five years since the last Odyssey redesign, a diverse team of faculty, staff, and students at Queens embraced the goal of making the Odyssey a more compelling communication tool for alumni, friends, and the community. After looking at over 50 examples of best-in-class magazines from all types of colleges and universities, that team suggested the following changes reflected in this issue.
• First, the name of the magazine has changed from Odyssey to Queens. It looks beautiful and it really makes our name “sing.” This is critical to building awareness for Queens and reinforcing our brand recognition, both of which are strategic imperatives for the University. By the way, the vast majority of university magazines examined by the task force utilized the actual university name in the title.
• A much greater emphasis has been placed on strong photography and telling interesting and engaging stories about Queens’ alumni, faculty, and students rather than the smaller, isolated news blurbs featured in past issues. In particular, you’ll notice two longer feature stories (instead of just one) and some new types of content including a standing “Parting Thoughts” essay and an “In the Classroom” story that showcases an interesting course being taught on campus.
• Class Notes continue to be as strong as ever, but they have been brightened up with the addition of several alumni profiles. The goal is to profile about three alumni with each new issue.
• The overall design of the magazine is cleaner, lighter, and more contemporary. The typeface was changed to promote readability, and the paper stock was changed as part of our effort to go green and use more recycled paper products.
We are proud and excited about the quality of this showplace magazine and hope you’ll be just as proud as you pick it up for a read. We look forward to hearing what you think, and we hope you’ll share your feedback with us so that we can make sure the magazine continues to serve the needs and interests of alumni.
