If you have signed up for Queens University of Charlotte's QNewsLetter, but are not receiving it in the first week of February, April, June, August, October & December, filtering software on your computer or at your Internet Service Provider may be blocking the newsletter. It is estimated by information technology experts that 20-30% of all desired, legitimate email is blocked en route to the recipient by a filter that judges it to be spam.
We check each QNewsLetter carefully to ensure it is free from keywords and formatting that might trigger anti-spam filters. However, there is no universal, foolproof method of ensuring an email is not blocked. Certain filters may still identify our outgoing email as spam, and prevent you from receiving it.
Some Internet Service Providers have even begun to block all email that arrives from an address not on your "whitelist": in these cases, the responsibility rests with you to specify that you wish to receive email from us. EarthLink, Mindspring and TWave are among the ISPs who employ this filter.
- Add qnewsletter@queens.edu to your "whitelist" of accepted email senders. You may need to do this within your email program; within any anti-virus and anti-spam programs you use; within your ISP email account settings; or all of the above. The terminology varies; "allowed senders", "email permissions" and "approved addresses" are good examples of phrases to look for.
- Check your email "junk" folder(s) frequently at the beginning of even-numbered months. Different email programs use different terminology: the folder(s) may be named "deleted", "trash", "blocked", "bulk", "filtered", "screened", etc. In most cases, if your email program is responsible for filtering the message, it will retain it in such a folder for a short period of time before deleting it irrevocably. If you do find the QNewsLetter in temporary storage, you may be able to instruct your email program to stop filtering it.
The details on how to accomplish the above will vary from program to program and from ISP to ISP. You can learn more from the "Help" sections within your programs and on your ISP's web site.
