The Department of Information Technology Services coordinates both academic and administrative users.
Information Technology Services is located in the basement of Walker Science Building. I.T. Services houses the servers and control center for the University's integrated administrative software system and high capacity fiber optic network. This center and network provide distributed computing capabilities to all administrative offices of the University, support for the University's admissions telecounseling center and library's automated operations, as well as access to the Internet for faculty, students and staff.
Faculty members and staff also have access to individual personal computers with software appropriate to their needs. Student access to computers on campus is provided through the facilities described below. For more information, visit the Department of Information Technology Services at http://campus.queens.edu/its.
You are encouraged to bring you own computer to campus; however, there are plenty of open computer labs on campus. Each residence hall (except Barnhardt) offers at least one open lab. Also, there are open labs across campus in academic buildings that cater to a variety of student needs. Personal e-mail accounts as well as Internet access are available in these labs. Lab hours are posted to help you plan ahead.
For those of you bringing computers to campus, you may access the Internet through phone modems, if so equipped. Students in Belk, Hayes and South Halls have direct network access. This access is available with the following equipment:
- A Pentium-level IBM-compatible PC with Windows (95, 98, 2000, XP)
- A 10/100 Ethernet network interface card
- A Category 5 Ethernet cable with RJ-45 connectors
- Internet Browser (Queens supports Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 SP2 or higher)
The Department of Information Technology Services also recommends Microsoft Office as the Office Productivity suite to use with our network.
If you do bring a computer to campus, please be aware that the Department of Information Technology Services is unable to provide technical or equipment support, but can make referrals to reputable vendors in the area. The University maintains all computer labs and data ports that are available for student use.
