Yap Study Tour Overview
Welcome to the Yap Study Tour Homepage! The Yap Study Tour is part of the John Belk International Program at Queens University of Charlotte. Through this unique month-long program, inaugurated in May 2001, students live and work in Yap, a member of the Federated States of Micronesia and located 500 miles southwest of Guam in the Pacific. Surrounded by mangrove forests and beautiful coral beaches, Yap has a peaceful tropical island lifestyle and traditional culture.
The Study Tour consists of a prep class that all participating students take the spring semester before their trip, followed by about three and half weeks on the Island of Yap working closely with local citizens on environmental science related GPS/GIS field projects. Students and faculty work with local Yapese officials, scientists and students to survey the local landscape and monitor environmental resources. This work aids the Yapese government in the preparation of its Environmental Stewardship Plan, an effort to balance the preservation and use of marine and watershed resources. Students live in Colonia, the capital and epicentre of activity in Yap, and during their free time have the opportunity to sea kayak, scuba dive, snorkel, beachcomb and sight-see. With its pristine coral reefs, crystal clear water and numerous manta rays, Yap is rated one of the top three diving locations in the world.
