Michele Shaul received her doctorate in Latin American Literature from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill with a dissertation entitled Myth and Folklore in Mulata de Tal. She currently is Chair of the Department of Foreign Languages at Queens University of Charlotte in Charlotte, North Carolina. Her critical essays have been included in El sujeto femenino en escritoras hispánicas, Círculo de cultura panamericano, Selected Essays: International Conference on The Outsider, Ilustres autores guatemaltecos de los siglos XIX y XX as well as in Cien años de magia: ensayos críticos sobre la obra de Miguel Angel Asturias. Her interview with William De Paula, interpreter for the debates during the 1996 presidential and vicepresidential campaigns was published in the publication of the Carolinas Association of Translators. She collaborated with Oralia Preble-Niemi in the preparation of an entry on Miguel Angel Asturias in The Feminist Encyclopedia of Latin American Literature and her translation of the novel The Suitcases was published in 2005. She has presented papers at numerous regional and national conferences. Research interests include the use of myth and folklore in Latin American literature, the expression of exile in literature as well as Latino writers in the United States.

Foreign Language connection:
Barbara Merry received her doctorate in French Literature from Cornell University with a dissertation entitled Mennippean Satire in Paul Scarron’s Roman comique. This was published as a monograph under the same title in 1991 by Peter Lang. The vagaries of life have allowed her to experience the art of teaching in many contexts, including outward-bound style experiential learning: canoe-camping and history lessons, in French, following the trail of the French Voyageurs in the great North Woods of Minnesota. She is currently collaborating with the Fédération Internationale de Savate to promote two French Martial Arts-Savate Boxe Francaise (French-style kick boxing) and Canne (Cane fighting)- in the United States. She is preparing a translation of an early 20th century French monograph on these two sports, coordinating training seminars in the North America for the Comité Nationale de Canne et Bâton, and translating promotional documents for the upcoming Savate World Championships.

Natacha Carrillo was born and raised in Uruguay. She did her undergraduate studies at the Instituto de Filosofía Ciencias y Letras in Montevideo, Uruguay. She came to USA in 1983 and she received a Master Degree in Arts and Sciences from Michigan State University in 1985 and a Master in Philosophy from New York University in 1990. She had experience teaching Spanish for several years at New York University and The New School in NYC. Since 1994, she has lived in Charlotte with her husband and three children. She has also taught Spanish part-time at Winthrop University and she went to Salamanca, Spain as the director of a student group in 2004. She enjoys art, poetry and traveling.
Dr. Lucia Galleno studied Romance Languages and Literatures with a Designated Emphasis in Film at the University of California, Berkeley and is currently completing a Master in Counseling in Education, Mental Health at Gardner-Webb University. Dr. Galleno's research includes, poetry, theater, performance arts and film with a focus on trauma and humor. She will be presenting at the Cesar Vallejo's conference at Hofstra University "Experiencia y performance en Idilio Muerto". Dr. Galleno believes in an engaging and participatory education.

Yin Han is the mother of three children, 7yrs, and 5 yrs and 16 months old. She was born and raised in China, completed her education in China and finished her Master’s in England. She started teaching Mandarin Chinese at Queens University of Charlotte in 2004. Right now she teaches beginning and intermediate levels at Queens and night classes at CPCC. Anahid Abifaker was born in Lebanon. Her husband was born in Venezuela. Her daughter was born in California and her son was born in New York. Currently, she is teaching Arabic and Global Connections at UNC Charlotte and Arabic at Queens University of Charlotte. Recently, Anahid received certification from the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages in Arabic oral and written proficiency. She has also taught mathematics at the college level since 1995 at UNC Charlotte and for the last two years at Central Piedmont Community College. She has also worked at the University Center for Academic Excellence at UNC Charlotte, assisting in managing the Tutorial Services office. Besides living in Lebanon and the USA, Anahid has visited the following countries: Venezuela, England, Italy, Austria, Mexico, Syria, Canada and Nigeria. She also makes good tasting Baklava and was licensed to trade in the Stock Market.
