MUSC 100 – Introduction to Music
Study of the basic materials of music, survey of the important composers and examination of selected masterpieces with reference to cultural background; technical knowledge of music not necessary for enrollment. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 103 – Theory and Composition I
Fundamentals of notation, tonality, scales and modes, interval and triadic structure. Elementary characteristics of melodic form. Four-part writing in a homophonic style using triadic structures. Analysis of chorale style involving triads, seventh chords, modulation, nonharmonic tones. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 103L - Theory and Composition I Laboratory
This laboratory introduces students to the relationship of "sound to music notation" through the exploration of fundamental keyboard relationships. Pass/No Record. Must be taken concurrently with MUSC 103. 1Hr.
MUSC 104 – Theory and Composition II
Part writing in a homophonic style using triadic structures, seventh chords, nonharmonic tones, modulation, secondary chords and other chromatic harmonies. Prerequisite: MUSC 103. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 110 - Fundamentals of Music
Basics of music theory: notation of pitch, rhythm, scales and harmony. Students will listen to music as they begin to distinguish the basic elements and will learn how to write and play some simple tunes on the keyboard. Class activities will include collaboration on a variety of instruments as theory is translated into sound. No previous musical experience required. 3 Hrs, Fall and Spring Term, every year
MUSC 113 – Sight-Singing and Ear Training I
Study and application of techniques of music reading and identification of sound. Course is completed at any time during the term when proficiency has been achieved. Grading is Pass/No Record. Prerequisite: MUSC 103. 1 Hr.

MUTH 131, 132 – Freshman Music Therapy Practicum I, II
Students who are freshmen in the music therapy program will work in the on-campus music therapy clinic observing, planning, conducting and evaluating music therapy sessions for children with various disabilities. Grading is Pass/Fail for all students enrolled. 1 Hr., 1 Hr.
MUSC 200 – From Jazz to Rock 'N Roll
A survey of blues, jazz and rock 'n'roll from the turn of the century to 1968. Important artists/composers will be studied and representative examples of the music will be experienced. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 201 - World Music
This course introduces students to the music of 10-12 non-Western countries/regions, their traditional instruments, a sample of musical events, and listening examples. Students also explore how music fits into each society and make comparisons to their own experiences. Students are taught the basic elements of Western music and given listening examples as a basis for comparison. Also included are experiences in other creative art forms of each country/region such as dance and visual art. Each section concludes with examples of music representing the fusion of each country/region and Western music. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 204 – Theory and Composition IV
Introduction to 16th and 18th century counterpoint. Two-and three-voiced writing in contrapuntal and harmonic styles. Analysis and written exercises. Prerequisite: MUSC 203. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 207 – Music in America
A survey of music and musical practices in the United States from colonial times to the present, with particular emphasis on those inherent qualities which have permeated America's serious and popular music over the past three centuries. No musical background necessary. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 211 – Music Therapy Methods & Materials for Children
Emphasis will be placed on selecting appropriate music therapy experiences for young children with special needs. Students will create, arrange and conduct appropriate music activities for children with various disabilities. Prerequisite: MUSC 217 and first year of theory. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 213 – Sight-Singing and Ear Training III
Continued study and application of techniques of music reading and identification of sound. Course is completed at any time during the term when proficiency has been achieved. Grading is Pass/No Record for all students enrolled. Prerequisite: MUSC 114. 1 Hr.
MUSC 214 – Sight-Singing and Ear Training IV

MUSC 215 – Diction for Singers (English, Latin & Italian)
Two 50-minute periods weekly in which students are instructed in use of the International Phonetic Alphabet as well as the correct pronunciation of the English, Latin and Italian languages in relation to singing. Prerequisite: Previous vocal training or consent of the instructor. 1 Hr.
MUSC 216 – Diction for Singers (French and German)
Two 50-minute periods weekly in which students are instructed in the correct pronunciation of the French and German languages in relation to singing. Prerequisite: MUSC 215. 1 Hr.
MUTH 217 – Introduction to Music Therapy
An introductory course surveying the use of music therapy with individuals having various handicapping conditions including mental retardation, emotional disturbance, orthopedic handicaps, medical disorders, speech, hearing and visual impairments. Open to all students. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 231, 232 – Sophomore Music Therapy Practicum III, IV
Further working experience in the on-campus Music Therapy Clinic. Students continue to apply training and skills gained from the introductory course and experienced in music therapy study. Required of all sophomore music therapy majors. Grading is Pass/Fail for all students enrolled. 1 Hr.
MUSC 310 – Conducting
A course designed to develop conducting skills appropriate to the performance of instrumental and choral music. Basic skills covered include the negotiation of various patterns, preparatory beats, cues, releases, etc. Prerequisite: MUSC 114. 2 Hrs.
MUTH 311 – Music Therapy Methods & Materials for Adults
Musical materials, methods and repertoire for adults will be emphasized. Students must learn a wide variety of songs from various decades which are appropriate for all adults, including geriatric clients. Prerequisite: MUSC 211 and completion of guitar is recommended. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 313, 314 – Piano Pedagogy and Literature I, II
A survey and evaluation of piano methods for use in teaching beginning and intermediate students. Examination of the literature for advanced students, with discussion of musicianship, technique, theory, and interpretation. Students will observe the teaching styles of several professional piano teachers. 2 Hrs., 2 Hrs.
MUSC 321 – Music History & Literature I
An historical survey of music from ancient times to the end of the Baroque Era (1750). Designed to develop a perspective of the development of music in its social-cultural context, a repertory of representative works and composers, and a technique for listening analytically and critically. Required for music majors. Non-majors by permission only. Prerequisite: MUSC 100. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 322 – Music History and Literature II
Continuation of MUSC 321, covering the period from 1750 to the present. Required for music majors. Non-majors by permission only. Prerequisites: MUSC 100 and MUSC 321. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 324 – Vocal Pedagogy I
Study of history and schools of vocal teaching and technique. Methods and procedures for teaching private and class voice. Vocal health and prevention/recognition of vocal abuse. Prerequisites: Permission of the instructor and one year of college-level vocal
instruction. 2 Hrs.
MUSC 325 – Vocal Pedagogy II and Literature
The study of diction, its application to teaching vocal technique; survey, evaluation, and examination of vocal literature for elementary and advanced students; supervise practice teaching within the class and observation of private voice teaching. Prerequisite: Successful completion of MUSC 324. 2 Hrs.
MUTH 331, 332 – Junior Music Therapy Practicum V, VI
A continuation of working experience in the on-campus Music Therapy Clinic. Students now take a more responsible role in working with clients, and applying skills and training gained in upper level music therapy courses. Grading is Pass/Fail. 1 Hr., 1 Hr.
MUSC 341 – String Laboratory
Two weekly sessions of 50 minutes each. Students will learn techniques of playing and teaching string instruments, including fretted instruments. 1 Hr.
MUTH 343 – Percussion Laboratory
Two weekly sessions of 50 minutes each. Students will learn techniques of playing and teaching percussion instruments. 1 Hr.
MUSC 350 – Independent Studies in Music
Students who have shown a particular interest in some phase of music may pursue this interest under the guidance of an appointed faculty member. Prerequisite: Permission of the department, junior or senior standing, and at least a B average in all music studies taken at Queens University of Charlotte. 3 Hrs.
MUSC 355 – Topics in Music History and Literature
An in-depth study of a specific musical era or genre. Significant developments, genres and composers will be studied from the social and cultural context. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 357 - Topics in Music as Therapy
This course will explore physiological and psychological effects of music, age-related literature, or music as an avocational interest. Specifics topics are announced annually and are open to all majors. May be repeated for credit under different subtitles. No prerequiste, may vary with topic. 1, 2 or 3 hrs. As needed.
MUSC 399 – Half-Recital
The preparation and performance of a half-recital in the major instrument. A performance examination must be passed at least 30 days before the scheduled day of performance. See the Music Department Handbook for program/recording fee. Grading is Pass/No Record for

MUSC 400 – Senior Recital
The preparation and performance of a full public solo recital in the major instrument. A performance examination must be passed at least 30 days before the scheduled day of performance. See the Music Department Handbook for program/recording fee. Grading is

MUTH 401 – Psychology of Music I
Music preference and ability are studied, along with physiological, cognitive and affective responses to music. Prerequisites: PSYC 201. To be taken in junior or senior year. Open to all students. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 402 – Psychology of Music II
Study of observation systems and measurements as well as historical, philosophical, descriptive and experimental research related to music therapy. Prerequisite: MUSC 401. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 409 – Music in Therapy I
The use of music therapy in clinical settings with psychiatric and geriatric clients. Assessment, behavioral objectives, treatment plans, documentation and evaluation, as well as treatment modalities and therapeutic techniques are discussed for each population. Must be taken concurrently with MUSC 411. Open to music therapy juniors and seniors. This course fulfills the writing-intensive course requirement for the Bachelor of Music degree in music therapy. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 410 – Music in Therapy II
Continuation of Music in Therapy I with special emphasis on new trends and uses of music therapy in childbirth, general hospital settings, substance abuse and pain centers. Major therapeutic techniques are surveyed and discussed. The course concludes with a comprehensive review of medical, clinical and population terminology. Must be taken concurrently with MUSC 412. This course fulfills the writing-intensive course requirement for the Bachelor of Music degree in music therapy. Prerequisite: MUSC 409. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 431, 432 – Senior Music Therapy Practicum VII, VIII
Music therapy sessions conducted by music therapy seniors in a variety of human service agencies in the community. Special emphasis is given to adults, including psychiatric and geriatric clients. Must be taken concurrently with MUSC 409, 410. 2 Hrs. , 2 Hrs.
MUSC 455 – Seminar in Applied Analysis
Independent study and analysis of compositional techniques and formal styles of compositions studied in music literature and applied music classes. This course fulfills the writing-intensive course requirement for the Bachelor of Arts degree or the Bachelor of Music degree in applied music. Prerequisite: MUSC 204 and MUSC 306 or 319. 3 Hrs.
MUTH 499 – Professional Music Internship: Music Therapy
A six-month continuous full-time affiliation with an approved clinical facility which follows all course work. The intern will perform assigned music therapy duties under the supervision of an experienced registered music therapist. Open to music therapy majors who have completed all course work. Grading is Pass/Fail for all students enrolled. 2 hours minimum.

Applied Music (for no credit)
Students should register through the Queens Music Academy.
Private instruction
Piano, organ, strings, voice, guitar, harp or other instrument. The general aim of private instruction is development of all phases of performance: technique, style, musicianship, interpretation and repertoire. Assignments to instructors are made by the chairman of the department and students usually remain with the same instructor throughout the course of study.
Students registered for two or three credits per term receive 60 minutes of individual instruction and group or workshop sessions scheduled by the instructor or department; students registered for one credit per term receive 30 minutes of individual instruction and a one-hour weekly group repertoire or workshop session. Credit received in applied music on the basis of Pass/No Record grading cannot be used toward major or minor concentrations in music.

*MUSC 157, 158, 159, 160 – Piano Class I, II, III, IV
Two weekly sessions of 50 minutes in which students are provided basic instruction in piano, designed to build technique, repertoire, sight-reading, harmonization, improvisation skills and ensemble playing skills. These courses serve as preparation for MUSC 395 and 396 - Functional Piano I and II. Regular practice required. Prerequistes: Courses must be taken sequentially or by permission of the instructor. 1 Hr., 1 Hr., 1Hr., 1Hr., Piano I & III, Fall term; Piano II & IV, Spring Term.
*MUSC 165, 166 – Guitar Class I, II
One weekly session of 50 minutes in which students are instructed in the fundamentals of guitar playing. This course is specifically designed for the music therapy major who must pass a proficiency exam in this instrument before graduation. Music 165 is prerequisite to Music 166. 1 Hr., 1 Hr., Spring.
*MUSC 175, 176 – Voice Class
Two weekly sessions of 50 minutes each, in which students with little or no vocal training are instructed in the basic vocal principles, simple exercises and songs; regular practice is required. Open to all students; recommended for music therapy majors who will not study voice as the principal applied area. Should be taken as early as possible in the program of study. 1 Hr., Fall and Spring.
MUSC 177, 178 – Symphonic Band
This ensemble is open to all Queens University of Charlotte students by permission of instructor. Repertoire will include standard band literature with a concert scheduled each semester. This group will perform as a pep band, Royal Pride, for selected home basketball games and other campus events. Course may be repeated. 1 Hr., 1 Hr., Fall and Spring.
MUSC 179, 180 – Orchestra
This ensemble is open to all Queens University of Charlotte students by permission of instructor. Repertoire will include literature for string orchestra with a concert scheduled each semester. May be repeated for credit. 1 Hr., 1 Hr., Fall and Spring.
MUSC 185, 186 – Small Ensembles
(1)Small Ensemble: Accompanying or work, discussion and performance in chamber groups, sonatas, trios, quartets.
(2) Piano Ensemble: Study and performance of duet and two-piano literature with a member of the piano faculty.
(3)Wind Ensemble: Study and/or performance of literature for woodwind and brass instruments.
(4)Guitar Ensemble: Study and/or performance of ensemble music for guitar. Grading is Pass/Fail. Prerequisite: Permission of the instructor. 1 Hr., 1 Hr.
(5)Voice Ensemble: Study and/or performance of ensemble music for voice.

(7)Improvisational Experience: This course provides experience in live music-making forums under a variety of improvisational models. Students should increase their comfort level in playing their instruments both with and without music in front of them. Prerequiste: two semesters of applied lessons a the college level.
MUSC 187, 188 – Queens University of Charlotte Chorale
The choral ensemble that performs for major University concerts on campus and several church worship services in the community. Open to all students who enjoy and are able to sing. MUSC 190, 191 – Opera Theatre
The Opera Theatre performs operas and musicals, both complete productions and scene work in a concert setting. The class is open to all students through auditions held early in the Fall Semester. Performances are scheduled during Term II. 1, 2 or 3 Hrs.
MUSC 193, 194 – Royal Showstoppers
This ensemble will work from standard repertoire and perform at campus and community events as needed for public relations and entertainment purposes to satisfy particular needs of the University. This course is an elective and does not count for ensemble credit for music majors. 1Hr., 1Hr.
MUSC 197, 198 – Queens University of Charlotte Chamber Singers
A select chamber choral ensemble that performs for University and community functions. Admission by audition only; repertoire includes secular and sacred choral works designed for smaller, chamber groups from the fifteenth through the twentieth centuries. 1 Hr., 1 Hr.
MUSC 390, 391 – Opera Theatre
This course is an upper class level of MUSC 190, 191. 1, 2 or 3 Hrs.
MUSC 395 – Functional Piano Class I
Includes procedures and skills for proficiency in reading, harmonization and transposition at sight as well as experience in accompanying. Open to any student with sufficient background, but designed particularly for students majoring in music therapy. The class meets for two 50-minute sessions each week. Students may exempt this course by passing an examination. This course must be repeated until required skills are mastered. Prerequisite: Sufficient background in keyboard skills, as determined by the instructor. 1 Hr.
MUSC 396 – Functional Piano Class II
A continuation of Music 395, this course is especially important to the music therapy student. Special emphasis is placed on creativity and improvisation, including the ability to compose original melodies, accompaniments and short pieces extemporaneously in a variety of moods and styles, vocally and instrumentally. A proficiency exam is given at the end of MUSC 396. Prerequisite: MUSC 395. 1 Hr.
