Physical education is a valued component of all undergraduate programs. Students are required to complete two physical education courses as part of their holistic higher education experience. Students are given numerous course options to choose from such as: horseback riding, lifeguarding, weight lifting, dance and many more! To see an example course list click HERE.
Mission Statement:
The department of physical education fosters the vision and mission of the College of Arts and Sciences. Through excellence in teaching, students learn cogitatively by using their reason, intuition and perception. We provide an environment that encourages students to develop movement awareness, physical skill development, and ethical behaviors that can be applied on a global level. Recognizing the connection between a sound body and mind, we strive to empower students to sustain regular, lifelong physical activity and knowledge as a foundation for a healthy, productive and fulfilling life.
Student Learning Outcomes:
1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of the fitness fundamentals, ethical standards and how they can be applied to everyday life. (Cognitive)
2. The student will demonstrate physical fitness and will undergo kinesthetic improvement during his or her time in the physical education program. (Kinesthetic)
3. The student will demonstrate the lifelong physical health and will attempt to apply the kinesthetic, cognitive and ethical knowledge and behaviors to his or her life. (Lifelong Learning)
Cognitive
We enable our students to learn by using their reason, intuition and perception. This technique is used to change or influence behavior. Students’ behavior is influenced by many factors such as culture, environment, education and motivation. Therefore cognitive learning involves understanding how these factors influence behavior and then using this information to develop growth and understanding.
Kinesthetic
Such style of learning energizes the body through kinesiology, the science of body movement and the relationship of muscles and body systems to brain function. We teach students physical movement as a means of improving neuromuscular memory, movement awareness, and skill development. By teaching our students’ bodies through movement, we strive to improve their full physical potential.
Lifelong Learning
Providing students cognitive, kinesthetic and ethical learning will cause students to develop both physically and mentally. Therefore, students gain knowledge and motor learning needed to live a healthy lifestyle. Through these learning styles, students will come to value physical education as a key part of their life and will continue the course practices beyond the classroom or gym.
