Beginning the Interview Process

September 26, 2018

To the Queens Community:

I am pleased to report that the search for our next president is progressing well and on schedule.

In an effort that began over the summer, our team at Storbeck, Pimentel & Associates has done an outstanding job recruiting potential leaders on our behalf. We continue to be impressed by the number of candidates, the quality of their skills and experiences, and the diversity of those who have expressed interest in the position. Even those who don’t know Queens recognize this role as an intriguing and attractive opportunity to build on our momentum.

The Presidential Search Committee met earlier this month to review a broad and deep pool of prospective leaders, including those who currently serve as college and university presidents, provosts, vice presidents and deans, as well as candidates from outside higher education.

At that meeting, the search committee chose to advance for confidential preliminary first round interviews a select group of candidates whose backgrounds and experiences seem especially consistent with the qualities and qualifications established for our search.

As a reminder, you indicated a strong interest in candidate qualities such as personal integrity and ethics, high energy, humility and a sense of humor. You want our next president to understand the evolving nature of higher education in the 21st century and you shared a strong desire for candidates who will demonstrate an authentic appreciation for the values and culture that make Queens special.

Reflecting the broad range of responsibilities of a university president, you also expressed interest in a variety of prior experiences, including the ability to set a vision and execute a strategic plan; passion for the liberal arts and pre-professional education; and a track record of strengthening engagement with an institution’s surrounding community.

On the heels of our first round interviews I will provide you with an update regarding next steps in the process.

We are encouraged by our early progress!
