Presidential Search Update
To the Queens Community,
As we prepare to start a new academic year, I’m writing to share an update on the search for Queens’ next president.
The Presidential Search Committee met twice over the summer, once in May and again in July. As a reminder of our progress, so far we have named the search committee, gathered community input and released the position prospectus.
Your feedback from the forums and survey helped inform the development of the prospectus; it will also guide us as we begin the work of evaluating candidates. Among your priorities for the next president, top themes included attracting, developing and retaining outstanding faculty and staff; fostering a culture of intellectual engagement; and enhancing Queens’ national reputation as an innovator in the liberal arts and pre-professional education.
You shared a preference for candidate qualities such as personal integrity and ethics, high energy, humility and a sense of humor. You want our next president to understand the evolving nature of higher education in the 21st century and you expressed a strong desire for candidates who will demonstrate an authentic appreciation for the values and culture that make Queens so special.
Reflecting the broad range of responsibilities of a university president, you also indicated interest in a variety of prior experiences, including the ability to set a vision and execute a strategic plan; passion for the liberal arts and pre-professional education; and a track record of strengthening engagement with an institution’s surrounding community.
Thanks to the work of our search partners at Storbeck/Pimentel & Associates, we are developing a strong pool of prospective candidates. Our pool includes leaders who are currently serving as college and university presidents, provosts, vice presidents and deans, as well as candidates from outside higher education.
Even at this relatively early stage, we are impressed by the number of candidates, the quality of their skills and experiences, and the diversity of the leaders who have expressed interest in the position. Our consultant team reports that the position has been well-received in the market. Even those who are unfamiliar with Queens quickly come to recognize our unique strengths and appreciate the great opportunity to build on our momentum.
At this stage in the process, we are continuing to receive applications and actively recruit outstanding candidates. Soon we will begin the work of evaluating candidates and narrowing the pool. We remain on schedule with our timeline and look forward to the next phase of this process.
As always, we thank you for your interest and support. We will continue to keep you updated via the presidential search website. Best wishes for another terrific academic year!
Chair, Presidential Search Committee
