On Campus

Learn conceptual skills and strategies for supporting vulnerable populations at the individual, agency and community level.

A BA in Human Service Studies at Queens will give you the skills and connections to move your career forward as you give back.

Have you considered a career helping people with mental health issues, survivors of domestic violence, teens in crisis or at-risk children and their families? Do you want to advocate on behalf of clients and help them access community resources? Do you possess creativity, determination, compassion, problem-solving, and leadership skills? If so, you are a great candidate for the human service studies major.

You will examine cultural and ethical issues that contribute to clients’ challenges and learn conceptual skills and strategies for supporting these vulnerable populations. Your knowledge will help you support clients at the individual, agency, and community level. When you graduate, you’ll be prepared to serve in an array of settings supporting children and families, mental health clients, inmates and persons with intellectual developmental disabilities.

Many students love learning about underserved populations and even enjoy volunteering in these communities. Yet, at some point students realize they need practical skills and interventions to guide their work. Human Service Studies is a major that allows you to take your learning deeper and learn best practices for supporting clients, families and systems.—Dr. Saundra Penn
