The High-Impact Practices we will highlight include: co-curricular activities supported by guest speakers, embedded librarians to assist in the research process, and assessment and student growth displayed through student ePortfolios. Participants will be invited to write and interact as they examine their curriculum for opportunities to integrate a course theme and high-impact practices into their teaching. Participants will leave this session with resources that support students in their quest as they become civically engaged through a growth-mindset.

Common Reading – Why adopt someone else’s? Create your own!

Shellee Stewart | Carolina E

This interactive 60-minute session showcases how one FYE department designed two original common readings tailored to First-Year and Transfer-Year Experience programs. Learn how student data, institutional priorities, and student voice shaped the content, themes, and structure to better reflect campus context and student needs. Participants will gain practical strategies for developing relevant, accessible materials and explore real examples, including student feedback on the most impactful chapters. In the second half, attendees will brainstorm their own ideas using guided prompts, collaborate with peers, and consider challenges like scalability and faculty buy-in.

Understanding the Role of HIPs in Learning Communities’ Success: An Interactive Exchange of Ideas

Tiffany Pogue | Mecklenburg 1

This interactive workshop will help participants plan, implement, and assess HIPs to improve student learning in co-curricular learning communities. Participants will leave the session with templates, worksheets and sample agreements to aid in the implementation of HIPs in their institutions. The workshop will present a case study of the role and impact of cocurricular learning communities at Albany State University (ASU). Since the inception of HIPs-centered course-linked learning communities at ASU, there is measurable impact on first-year students’ retention and progression rates that are undeniable. This academic impact was made possible by the successful planning, training, and implementation of HIPs as a critical part of the program’s structure.

From Community to Career: Embedding Professional Development in First-Year Learning Communities

Ilana Rivkovich | Mecklenburg 2

How can learning communities move beyond academic and social support to become catalysts for early career development? This session explores how the College of Computing and Informatics Learning Community at UNC Charlotte integrates career readiness into the first-year experience of Computer Science majors.

Participants will learn how students engage in employer site visits, résumé development, industry-sponsored projects, and mock interviews during their first year. Featuring a successful two-year partnership with TIAA, this session highlights a scalable model for embedding employer engagement and experiential learning into learning communities. Attendees will leave with practical strategies, program design ideas, and transferable tools for implementing career integration initiatives that support student success and professional identity development across disciplines.

Quick Talks 3 | Mecklenburg 3

Employer Engagement in Learning Communities to Build Career Readiness

LaShay McQueen, Kayla Brown, & Tara Hillman

McQueen & Hillman: This session will explore how learning communities could offer opportunities for employers to engage with students early in their college careers. As recruiters typically connect with upper level students and recent graduates, learning communities administrators are invited to consider strategies to help shape first-year students’ career development by partnering with campus and employer connections. Through class visits, mentorship, or other projects, employers could be instrumental to career development for first-year students and increase preparedness for future careers. This session will discuss how a learning communities program focused on helping first-year students build skill awareness, identify interests, and learn professional networking through interacting with employers early in their college journey.

Talk to Me: Humanizing Assignment Design in the AI Era

Melissa Gamez, Julie Funderburk, Bonnie Shishko, & Roseann Pluretti

Are you exhausted at the thought of reading yet another reflection from your students that was probably written by AI? Then join our session and hear how a linked-learning community ditched their formal, writing-based integrated assignment and tackled this issue by utilizing a TED Talk format instead. Faculty in the learning community will discuss the success and failure of this approach, compared to their former writing-based assignment and how it allowed students to understand the value of their own language and demonstrate integrated learning from their linked-learning community classes in a more relaxed, informal environment, without the use of written AI.

Thursday, Nov. 12 – 1:45-2:45 p.m. Exploring Wellness Through World Cultures: A Themed Learning Community that Engages Students in High-Impact Practices and Active Learning Structures Kate Hope & Renee Rude | Carolina D Join two enthusiastic and passionate reading and composition educators as they share about their journey to developing a themed learning community on […]

["post-4881","page","type-page","status-publish","hentry

 <!-- All in One SEO 5.0.3 -
