Dr. Robert Whalen teaches European and American history. European history courses include surveys of British, Irish, German and Russian history, and specialized courses on the French Revolution and Nazi Germany. American history courses include surveys of religious history and the history of journalism. 

Dr. Whalen has published five books: Bitter Wounds: German Victims of the Great War; Assassinating Hitler: Ethics and Resistance in Nazi Germany;  Like Fire in Broomstraw: Southern Journalism and the Textile Strikes of 1929-31; Sacred Spring: God and Modernism in Fin de Siecle Vienna. His newest book is Murder, Inc. and the Moral Life: Gangsters and Gangbusters in La Guardia's New York, published in fall 2016.
