President Lugo

Queens University of Charlotte installed Daniel G. Lugo, J.D. today as its 21st president. Lugo, a proven leader in the higher education sector for nearly two decades, joined Queens on July 1.

David Greene, Ph.D., president of Colby College, who has mentored Lugo throughout his higher education career, presented Lugo at the ceremony. Greene said, “In Dan Lugo the Queens University community has a leader of great intellectual depth, unshakeable integrity, and rich experience. As strong as he is as an academic leader—and he is truly exceptional—he is even better as a human being. He will be a compelling and compassionate president.”

Lugo, who was cited for his visionary leadership during the installation, said, “I encourage Queens and its supporters to rise again, to meet new challenges, to redefine our scale and mission, and to lead Charlotte and the world in addressing the toughest challenges of our times.

“We are called to serve and lead. To create new approaches to growth through partnership and collaboration. To use our size and agility as a model for other institutions nationally. Our innovative spirit, inspiring legacy and influential leaders position Queens to be among the new forerunners of American higher education,” said Lugo.

Charlotte Mayor and Queens alum Vi Lyles extended the city’s greetings during the installation. The ceremony included 75 Royal Line delegates, representing Queens classes from 1945 through 2023, and 35 school delegates ranging from institutions such as Yale and Princeton Universities to Davidson College and Johnson C. Smith University.

The ceremony also included a commissioned artwork created onsite during the ceremony by Bree Stallings, a multi-media artist and Queens alum. Mark and Maggie O’Connor, Grammy Award and CMA winners, performed the processional and recessional music to honor the university’s North Carolina heritage.
