CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Queens University of Charlotte has expedited a scholarship program, developed in conjunction with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, to support local students in their journey toward a bachelor’s degree.
The Queens Commitment promises a $10,000 minimum annual scholarship to admitted students from public, private and charter schools in Mecklenburg County. The offer applies to Central Piedmont Community College associate’s degree graduates as well.
“Queens is committed to Charlotte,” university president Daniel Lugo said. “We know that many members of our community have been impacted directly and indirectly by the global pandemic. The University was in the process of creating this program to roll out next fall. We expedited that timeline to help local families during this time of stress and uncertainty.”
In addition to the scholarships, students applying to Queens have no application fee and may choose to apply without submitting standardized test scores.
Admissions decisions will be released within two weeks of applying.
“This unprecedented time of crisis is bringing significant challenges for our students and their families,” CMS Superintendent Earnest Winston said. “This partnership with Queens University will help offer relief to families who may be struggling with the added financial burden of paying for their child’s college education. We are so pleased to have this local, private university partner step up in this way.”
North Carolina seniors now receiving a pass/fail on spring courses will not be penalized and Queens will fully accept remote learning courses. Furthermore, Queens has extended its deposit deadline to June 1 to allow students extra time to apply and to make their decisions.
“We want to let prospective students know we understand their challenges right now,” Lugo said. “The interruption to their learning and their lives has caused many unknowns. We don’t want to be one of them. Queens is willing to meet them where they are, and open opportunities.”
The Queens experience includes at least two guaranteed internships with local or national companies, as well as robust opportunities to study abroad during their four years, with no added cost.
