Living-Learning Communities

A Living-Learning Community (LLC) is a residential community that partners with an academic or social program on campus to provide a unique out-of-the-classroom experience emphasizing campus exploration, personal growth, and developing habits that will make you successful in your academic career. Our LLC programs are designed to create meaningful connections with Queens’ faculty and staff and prepare students for the classroom and beyond.

Why Join a Living-Learning Community?

Through Living-Learning Communities, students are connected with faculty, staff, and university resources that will assist them to succeed academically and socially. Research shows that students who participate in Learning Communities do better academically and socially, and create a better connection to the institution. They are also more likely to persist to graduation.

Although each LLC is unique, benefits include providing students with additional social and academic support, increased connection with academic faculty, specific programs and events related to that community focus, and exclusive off-campus social events.

Other benefits may include:

  • Increased peer support
  • In-hall faculty and staff interaction
  • Increased overall GPA
  • Educational, active, and supportive residential setting
  • Meeting people who have similar goals and aspirations
  • Finding help and encouragement informally through peer networking

Preyer Honors Program Living-Learning Community

The Preyer Honors Program Living-Learning Community is centered on developing intellectual curiosity and social connections between students across all academic programs. Learning is a continuous process that happens both inside and outside of the classroom. Honors housing students get the opportunity to shape their community as they integrate all that they are learning. Some examples of the programs held in honors housing include floor discussion groups, trips to area cultural events, museum tours, and exploring all that Queens and Queen City have to offer.

This community is found in the Hayes Residence Hall and offers a small, home away from home feel that allows you to build strong relationships and connections with each other. Being a part of this program requires admission to the Honors program.

What makes this experience unique?

Giving Back: Giving back to the greater community is the heart of this Living-Learning Community. In partnership with the Department of Diversity, Inclusion, and Community Engagement, you will have access to non-profits from all over the Charlotte area, such as Habitat for Humanity, Ronald McDonald House, Crisis Assistance Ministries, and more!

Development: Our number one priority is the student experience. Being a part of the Sed Min Household offers a chance for students to learn more about themselves as individuals, as team members, and as leaders. Residents can develop their personal and leadership skills while discovering their passions. Professional staff and student leaders assist you in setting goals and strategic plans throughout the year to attain your goals.

Community: Sed Min Household students live on the third floor of Hall Brown Overcash (HBO) Residence Hall – a community-style hall on the far end of the residential quad.
