Royal Days of Service

Join DICE, Belk Chapel, and the Center for Academic Community Engagement in honoring Martin Luther King, Jr.’s memory through our Royal Days of Service. We’ve got a whole range of opportunities for you to get involved in on- and off-campus service throughout the week of January 8-13.

Transportation will be provided to all off-campus service shifts. We will leave campus 30 minutes before our shift and will arrive back to campus 30 minutes after the end of the shift.

Monday, January 8

  • Kick-off Celebration in Trexler
  • Announcement of the nonperishable food drive to benefit Loaves and Fishes (Priority Needs)
  • Individuals can sign up for shifts

Tuesday, January 9

  • Individuals can sign up for shifts

Wednesday, January 10 – Off-Campus

  • 9-11 a.m. – Crisis Assistance Ministry (30 open slots)
  • 1-3 p.m. – Loaves and Fishes (15 open slots)
  • 1-4 p.m. – Beds for Kids (20 open slots)

Thursday, January 11 – Off-Campus

  • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Samaritans Feet (30 open slots)
  • 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. – Classroom Central (15 open slots)
  • 1-3 p.m. – Loaves and Fishes (15 open slots)
  • 1-3 p.m. – Latin American Coalition (10 open slots)
  • 1-4 p.m. – Habitat Restore (15 open slots)

Friday, January 12 – Royal Day of Service

Levine Center for Health & Wellness – Lobby and Claudia Belk Room

  • Operation Sandwich with Roof Above – Make 400 sandwiches to support Roof Above’s homeless neighbor’s program.  
  • Blankets for Project Linus – Craft 75 blankets for seriously ill and traumatized children ages 0-18 years old.
  • Book Cleaning for Promising Pages – Clean 300 books that were donated to Promising Pages to enhance literacy initiatives.
  • Homework Kit for Classroom Central – Assemble and distribute homework kits, notes of encouragement, and flashcards to empower students for academic success.
  • Make Pet Toys for Humane Society – Create pet toys using old t-shirts and other supplies to enhance the well-being of animals in their care.
  • Happy Home Bucket Cleaning Supplies Collection and Assembly (Charlotte Family Housing) – Create 30 buckets filled with cleaning supplies and other household items to help families transition into stable housing.
  • Ronald McDonald House Door Decorations – Make door decorations for the Ronald McDonald House to help families feel warmth and love as they travel away from home while their children are receiving care.

Saturday, January 13, 2024 – MLK Parade in Uptown Charlotte

Join us as we march in the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade! We invite you to bring family, friends, and pets to represent Queens in the annual parade. The parade will line up at the corner of N. Tryon Street and Montford Point Street in Uptown Charlotte and will proceed down N. Tryon Street. The entire parade route is about a mile long. The parade officially begins at 9:30 a.m. and will end by noon.

Students who need transportation to the parade should email DICE@queens.edu no later than Thursday, January 11. If you plan to meet the Queens group there, please meet at the corner of N. Tryon Street and Montford Point Street between 8:30-9:00 a.m.
